COVID-19: Global daily figure increases by more than 212,000, says WHO; Nigeria’s toll hits 28,167; Lagos conducts 42,348 tests as 177 die; in Russia, cases rise by 6,736 to 681,251; Enugu records 30 cases

The World Health Organisation reported a record increase in global coronavirus cases on Saturday, with the total rising by 212,326 in 24 hours.
The biggest increases were from the United States, Brazil and India, according to WHO’s daily report.
The previous WHO record for new cases was 189,077 on June 28 and deaths have remained steady at about 5,000 a day.
Global coronavirus cases exceeded 11 million on Friday, according to a Reuters tally, marking another milestone in the spread of the disease that has killed more than half a million people in seven months.
Meanwhile, Nigeria has recorded 603 new COVID-19 cases in the country, as total infections from the virus climbed to 28,167.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) made this known on its official twitter handle on Saturday.
The NCDC said that as at the June 4, 603 new confirmed cases and 6 deaths were recorded in the country.
The health agency said that no new state reported a case in the last 24 hours.
According to NCDC, till date, 28,167 cases have been confirmed, 11,462 cases have been discharged and 634 deaths have been recorded in 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
NCDC stated that the 603 new cases were reported from 19 states- Lagos(135), Edo(87), FCT(73), Rivers(67), Delta(62), Ogun(47) and Kaduna (20).
Others were Plateau (19), Osun(17), Ondo(16), Enugu(15), Oyo (15), Borno (13), Niger(6), Nasarawa(4), Kebbi (3), Kano (2), Sokoto(1), and Abia(1).
The Federal  Government  has continued to advise citizens to take the COVID-19 prevention  seriously to avoid infecting other people unknowingly.
“Take responsibility – wear a face mask in public spaces, maintain physical distancing and practice hand and respiratory hygiene to protect yourself and loved ones,” NCDC stated.
Nigerians were also advised  to call the Duty Manager for emergency cases on 08062556177, while patients should report to hospitals early for care.
In Lagos State, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, on Sunday, said that the state tested a total of 42,348 samples for COVID-19 as at July 3.
Abayomi, who made the disclosure on his Twitter account, said that of the 42,348 samples, 10,926 returned positive.
He said that 748 COVID-19 tests were conducted in the state on July 3, out of which 87 new cases were confirmed.
“Out of the total number of confirmed cases, 1,695 patients have since been discharged from the Lagos COVID-19 care centres following full recovery.
“A total of 6,259 of the cases monitored in communities by COVID-19 Lagos Response Team have either fully recovered or are positively responding to treatments,” he said.
The commissioner said that 365 of the cases were under isolation in public and private care centres.
Abayomi, however, said that 2,430 active cases in the communities had yet to turn up for admission in care centres either due to fear of stigmatisation or preference for home care treatments.
“As at July 3, the number of COVID-19 related deaths in Lagos State had risen to 177,” he said.
According to the official, the time to take responsibility is now.
He advised the state residents to observe physical distancing and regularly wash their hands.
Abayomi also advised the residents to stay at home when unnecessary to go out, adding that they should wear face masks when going out to reduce the risk of infection.
Meanwhile, Russia recorded 6,736 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking its total to 681,251, the country’s coronavirus response centre said in a statement on Sunday.
The death toll rose by 134 to 10,161, while 450,750 people have recovered, including 3,871 over the last 24 hours, said the statement.
Moscow, the country’s worst-hit region, reported 650 newly-confirmed cases, taking its tally of infections to 224,860.
On Saturday, 280,347 people were still under medical observation, while more than 21 million virus tests have been conducted nationwide, Russia’s consumer rights and human well-being watchdog said on Sunday in a separate statement.
In Nigeria, the Enugu State Government has announced 30 fresh cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of  infections in the state to 372.
Commissioner for Health, Prof. Ikechukwu Obi, made the announcement in a statement on Sunday.
Obi stated that the ministry confirmed the 30 new cases in the update by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).
He added that the number of patients undergoing treatment was 182, while 181 had been discharged.
“The number of cases on treatment is 182, number of cases discharged – 181 and number of confirmed COVID-19 related deaths  is nine,” he said.
The commissioner called on residents be responsible, adding that COVID-19 is real.
He urged them to adhere to all the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) precautionary measures in order to stay safe.
