Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode Ibiyinka George, has donated N160 million to support the needy in support of the fight against coronavirus.
Making the donation in Lagos on Friday, George, the Atona Oodua of Yorubaland, member of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of PDP and a philanthropist, said the donation, in cash and foodstuffs (cows, bags of rice and beans, cartons of indomie noodles, cartons of groundnut oil and packs of bottled water), “is directly to the needy, the poor, the less privileged and all who are ravaged by the scourge of COVID 19 , regardless of partisan affiliation”.
It is also to cushion the harsh effect of lockdown ordered by the Federal Government to halt the spread of the virus.
N10 million of the money is designated to PDP members in Lagos State.
He is also sending money to the South-West chapter of the party.
George commended the federal and state governments for their efforts, so far, in combating the dreaded virus.
He said: “I’m making this donation because the government cannot do it alone. My intervention has nothing to do with politics. We are all Nigerians. This intervention should not be given any political colouration. I call on Nigerians to cooperate with the government in its determination to combat the spread of the deadly virus. I also pray that the Almighty God will guide President Muhammadu Buhari, ministers, governors and other public officials in their determination to curtail the virus. God will continue to protect Nigerians”.
