The Kano State Chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), on Tuesday said that 34 doctors have tested positive to the novel coronavirus in the state.
The NMA Chairman, Dr Sanusi Bala, said in Kano that one of the confirmed cases has died.
Bala explained that many of the victims were the doctors working at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) and other private clinics in the state.
According to him, many of them were infected through normal clinical routines while attending to unsuspected COVID-19 cases.
He vowed that the association would protect its members and appealed to authorities to provide more protection for doctors through procurement of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for AKTH, Mrs Hauwa Muhammed, said that the hospital had since procured and distributed PPE to frontline workers.
She said that the hospital management had ordered all Consultants and Heads of Department to train their staff on proper use of the PPE.
Meanwhile, a driver with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has tested positive for the novel coronavirus in Nasarawa State.
Governor Abdullahi Sule made the disclosure on Tuesday in Lafia during an expanded state security meeting.
Sule said that the driver transported test samples to the NCDC in Abuja and got infected in the process.
Sule said the driver who resided at Ado in Karu Local Government Area of the state, was confirmed positive on Tuesday morning.
According to the governor, the patient had been moved to an isolation centre at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Keffi, for treatment.
Sule said that all the coronavirus patients were receiving treatment at the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital, Lafia, and the FMC.
He said that the state had taken delivery of 6,000 personal protective equipment, 50,000 imported face masks as well as 50,000 face masks made by the National Youth Service Corps.
The governor urged the people of the state to adhere to all directives on COVID-19 prevention in order to stem the tide of the virus.
