Court sentences man to 5 years imprisonment for armed robbery in Bayelsa

 The Bayelsa High Court, Brass Division, on Friday, sentenced one Jacob Doukumo, 42, to five years imprisonment for armed robbery.

The convict, Doukumo, and his co- defendant, Believe Leisure, 36, were arraigned on three counts of conspiracy, armed robbery and unlawful possession of firearms in suit number BYHC/BHC/CR/1/2023.

The two men and three others at large were alleged to have robbed Mr Johnbull Newyear and one Jackson, on Dec. 24, 2022, in Sangana Akasa, Brass.

During trial, the Prosecution Counsel, Stella Jerry-Friday, informed the court that the gang while armed with  dangerous weapons including a gun and machetes robbed  their victims of of a 30 horsepower Suzuki outboard engine valued at N600,000 only.

Before judgment was delivered, Jerry-Friday informed the court that Doukumo was present for sentencing and the second defendant, Leisure, died in custody of the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Okaka, Yenagoa, while awaiting trial.

Delivering judgment in Yenagoa, the trial judge, Justice T.Y. Abasi, said that the prosecution had proved the case against the convict beyond reasonable doubt on the three counts.

Abasi subsequently sentenced Doukumo to five years in jail for the offences.

 

At the trial the prosecution said that the two men were arrested by the men of  Operation Puff Adder of the Bayelsa State Police Command on Dec. 24, 2022, at the Sangana creek in Brass Local Government area of Bayelsa.

 

The prosecution counsel had also informed the court that after diligent investigation by the Operatives of the Operation Puff Adder led by Supol Chris Nwaogbo, Believe Leisure and Jacob Doukumo were arrested and later remanded in custody.

 

Jerry-Friday said that the offences committed  contravened and was punishable under section 1(2)(a) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act CAP. R11, Laws of the Federation of  Nigeria, 2004.
