Who is the authentic chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State?
As at Tuesday night, even party members in the Gateway State were confused as to the correct answer.
This is due to the fact that three congresses were held at various locations in Abeokuta, the state capital.
‎The three gladiators in the crisis, which has deepened the crisis in the party, are Senator Buruji Kashamu, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole and a member of the House of Representatives (Remo Federal Constituency), Oladipupo Adebutu
As early as 8 am, loyalists of Kashamu gathered at the party’s secretariat for the congress while those loyal to Bankole converged on Ake Palace Ground for another congress.
To deepen the crisis, Adebutu’s loyalists held their congress at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) Complex, Abeokuta.
Eventually, the Kashamu faction produced a former chairman of Ijebu North Local Government, Chief Adebayo Dayo, as the state chairman and Alhaji Semiu Sodipo as the secretary.
The Bankole faction produced a former‎ Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Chief Wale Egunleti, as chairman and Hon. Johnson Olu-Fatoki as secretary.
A former House of Assembly member and former chairman of Ifo Local Government, Hon. Sikirulai Ogundele, emerged as the chairman of the Adebutu faction while Hon. Durotolu Bankole is the secretary.
Because of the supremacy battle and to forestall a breakdown of law and order, anti-riot policemen were deployed in strategic areas of the state capital.
Security agents were also seen at the various venues.
In their thank-you speeches, the factional chairmen promised to ensure that the party defeats the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led state government in 2019.
They also appealed to members divided by the crisis to return to the fold.
