The Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) in Anambra has expressed its approval for the State Government’s revocation of the contract for the rehabilitation of the 2.17km Niger Street Road, Fegge, in Onitsha.
The group hailed the government’s decision in a statement jointly signed by its state Chairman and Secretary, Mr Vincent Ezekwueme and Mr Chidi Mbah, and made available to newsmen in Onitsha on Tuesday.
Gov. Charles Soludo terminated the contract, which was being handled by TEC Engineering Nig. Ltd., over alleged negligence, underperformance and the lack of capacity to deliver on the job.
The statement applauded Soludo for paying impromptu visits to some of the ongoing projects in the state to see things for himself and evaluate the quality and extent of work done.
It described the governor’s action as “a step in the right direction”, pointing out that it would help to ensure quality and timely project execution and delivery in the state.
According to the group, to the glory of God, our governor, out of his patriotism and interest in the welfare of the citizens, visited the site and discovered negligence and lack of capacity.
It noted that the governor, who got worried that the contractor was “not keeping to the timeline and strict adherence to the agreement”, boldly terminated the contract.
“We thanked him for his courage, political will and capacity to do the needful to ensure in words and actions that Anambra people’s money must be judiciously used for public good,” the statement added.
It further stated that the governor had rekindled the people’s confidence, trust and hope in his administration by the singular act.
According to the group, the termination of the contract is a clear indication that it was transparently and prudently awarded.
