CAN expresses concern over incessant kidnappings, killings in Taraba

Leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has been accused of inciting Nigerians against the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Major-General Muhammadu Buhari.
Christian members of Kwara State Executive Council, under the aegis of Conference of Christians in the Government of Kwara State, who made the allegation, also accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of sponsoring Christians against the APC administration in the North-Central state with the aim of fomenting trouble and creating confusion in the state.
A communiqué by the Conference was signed by the Chairman and Secretary, Christopher Ayeni and Ayotunde Oyeniyi. It was read at a press conference in Ilorin, the state capital, by the Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Bode Olayemi.
The Conference said its warning was based on a recent action by some christian leaders who assembled at a church in Ilorin, and accused the APC, through a documentary, of alleged involvement in the activities of the Boko Haram insurgents in the North-East.
The communiqué asked the state commissioner of police, Director of State Security Service and other security chiefs to immediately arrest and prosecute all individuals hiding under the guise of religion to cause disaffection in the polity.
The communiqué reads: “We urge the state government to set the necessary machinery in motion to alert security agencies to put a stop, immediately, to the circulation and showing of the content of this obnoxious seminar and arrest any individual, organization, corporate or religious body.
“We found out that the destabilising agents of a section of Kwara CAN deliberately deceived Christian faithful by calling them to attend a prayer session at the church which turned out to be an obnoxious theatre for fanning embers of discord among peace loving people of the state.
“Rather than concentrate on prayers for peaceful elections, in March and April 2015, this group mustered Nigeria’s financial resources to sponsor the seminar by engaging canvassers to go into the electoral wards of the state and deliberately discredit and misinform the public about APC’s presidential candidate, Gen Muhammadu Buhari (rtd). Is Kwara CAN now a political party or an arm of a political party? Where did Kwara CAN raise funds to go into political canvassing at the grassroots instead of missionary works? Definitely this is from the N7 billion presidency’s largesse. Are we to use Nigerians’ resources to destroy our fellow brothers and sisters?”
