Buhari heads to South Africa for AU Summit

President Muhammadu Buhari will depart Nigeria for South Africa on Saturday to attend the 25th African Union (AU) Summit which is taking place in Johannesburg, according to a statement.
The statement, issued in Abuja on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, stated that Buhari would be undertaking his first continental assignment since taking office by chairing the meeting of the Peace and Security Committee of the AU summit.
The statement noted that the security meeting would hold on Saturday, the day of the President’s arrival.
It added that the President would also be holding a number of bilateral meetings that would consolidate his ongoing drive to secure Nigeria and neighbouring countries from Boko Haram.
The theme of the Summit is: “Year of Women Empowerment and Development towards Africa’s Agenda 2063.’’
Buhari will return to Nigeria on June 16.
