British Deputy Speaker, Nigel Evans, has resigned after being charged with a string of sex offences.
The 55-year-old Conservative is accused of two counts of indecent assault, five counts of sexual assault and one count of rape, director of public prosecutions Keir Starmer said.
`The charges involve seven victims, all men, and is alleged to have taken place between 2002 and 2013.
Evans, who will continue as a parliamentarian, said the accusations were “incredulous’’ but said he was “certain of
two things: firstly that I am innocent, and secondly that my innocence will be demonstrated.”
He is to appear in court on September 18 in the northern city of Preston.
