A secondary school drop out was killed on Monday night and property worth millions of naira destroyed when rival cult groups clashed in Ondo town, Ondo State.
The incident happened in Ijoka area of the ancient city.
It is, however, not clear if the 16-year-old Bolaji was a member of one of the groups or was caught in a crossfire.
Tension rose on Tuesday in the area as Bolaji’s family members vowed to avenge his killing.
But a source told Freedom Online that Bolaji belonged to the Eiye Confraternity and was attending a birthday ceremony when he was killed.
The source said there was an argument by members of the cult groups over a girl and “it is not clear who shot him dead”.
During a visit to the spot on Tuesday, our correspondent saw blood stain and broken bottles.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Enuowa Divisional Police Station in the town, Mr. Kunle Omisakin, a Superintendent of Police (SP), confirmed the incident.
“We are already investigating it with the aim of bringing the culprits to book,” he said.
Anti-riot policemen were seen on Tuesday patrolling the area to forestall a breakdown of law and order.
