Be careful of names you give your children, cleric cautions parents

islam_symbol_crescent_and_starA cleric, Sheik Azeez Abdulrahman, has advised parents, particularly Muslims, to be careful of the names they give their children because of the effect on their lives.

Abdulrahman gave the advice in his Friday sermon at the Central Mosque, Omu Aran, Kwara, and said there was a connection between a name and the disposition of the bearer.

The cleric, who is also the Chief Missioner, Islamic Youth Development Association, Omu-Aran chapter, said the issue of selection of names for children had always been treated lightly by parents.

He said: “the way and manner we name our children nowadays has contributed to the moral decadence ravaging our society.’’

He appealed to parents to select godly names for their children, stressing that “there is usually an interplay between the meaning of a name and the character of the bearer.

“The meaning of names should be taken into consideration. We should stop the habit of giving our children names which have derogatory meanings.’’

He noted that some traditional names have outlived their relevance, hence parents should be wary of the culture, religious and ethnic background in naming their children.
