Community Secondary School, Okutukutu in Yenagoa, now has a functional water scheme.

The scheme, inaugurated by the Commissioner for Education, Dr Gentle Emelah, was brought to fruition courtesy Bayelsa Educational Development Trust Fund (EDTF) and Rotary Club District 9141.

Rotary International District 9141 comprises Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta and Edo.

Emelah commended the EDTF for securing partnership with the Rotary Club to fund the 5,000-litre capacity water project.

In her remarks earlier, Dr Alice Atuwo, Executive Secretary at EDTF, applauded Rotary International for collaborating with the Fund in its Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) support program for schools in Bayelsa.

She said the support from District 9141 of the Rotary Club was commendable and should be emulated by other organizations, noting that governments across countries could not fund education alone.

Atuwo explained that provision of water in schools would ensure a hygienic environment to secure students from contracting water-borne diseases and reduce absenteeism.

Also addressing the inauguration, Mr Emeke Utebor, District Governor of Rotary International District, said the partnership with Bayelsa’s EDTF was an opportunity to render service to society.

Utebor said Rotary International was also providing grants to provide electronic learning support and electronic libraries for eligible schools.

He added that technology-aided learning was bridging the gap between rural and urban students.

He said the club was eager to extend the collaboration with EDTF in other spheres of education.

Dr Fineboy Ezekiel, Principal of the benefiting school, thanked EDTF and Rotary Club for the gesture and pledged the project’s maintenance and judicious use.

“We will not let you down. We are grateful and will want to be considered for the e-Library project. As you can see, our premises are fenced and secure,’’ he said.
