Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, has described the death of former PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, as a major loss to Nigeria’s political landscape and the African business community.
George, in a statement released on Monday, said Tukur’s passing represented the end of an era for a leader whose influence extended beyond party politics into business, governance and economic development.
The former PDP chieftain said he had a close working relationship with Tukur during his time as national chairman of the party.
Nigeria Loses Experienced Statesman
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Bamanga Tukur died in Abuja on Saturday, just days before his 91st birthday.
He was buried on Sunday in Yola, Adamawa State, according to Islamic rites.
George described the late politician as a trusted colleague, adviser and patriotic Nigerian who dedicated decades to national development.
He said Tukur’s contributions went beyond regional interests and reflected a commitment to Nigeria’s progress.
Political and Economic Contributions
George recalled Tukur’s leadership roles, including his tenure as chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party from 2012 to 2014, saying the late politician consistently promoted ideas aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s position internationally.
According to him, Tukur believed Nigeria had the potential to become a major economic force among nations.
Bode George also highlighted Tukur’s contribution to African entrepreneurship through his leadership roles in organisations such as the Africa Business Roundtable and the NEPAD Business Group.
Legacy at Nigerian Ports Authority
George noted that Tukur also made significant contributions during his tenure as Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) between 1975 and 1982.
He credited him with supporting the expansion and development of important maritime facilities, including Apapa Port and Tin Can Island Port in Lagos.
George said Tukur’s leadership helped shape Nigeria’s maritime sector during a critical period of national growth.
“A Mentor and Peacemaker”
Reflecting on their political relationship, Bode George described Tukur as more than a party leader, saying he was a mentor, bridge builder and organiser who maintained connections from grassroots members to national leaders.
“Your departure leaves an immense void not only within our party structure but across the entire political landscape,” George said.
He praised Tukur’s humility, dedication and commitment to public service.
Condolences to Family and PDP
George extended his condolences to Tukur’s family, friends and members of the PDP.
He said the former party chairman left behind a legacy of service and leadership that would remain remembered by Nigerians.
“Your contributions have left a foundation that will continue to inspire future generations,” he said.
