Baba KK: The man who said No to power – Dupe Olaoye-Osinkolu

Happy birthday to a man of principle who turned down a juicy offer to become the chairman of Alimosho Local Government in 1996.

On that fateful Saturday morning, a crowd gathered at his house, urging him to accept the unanimous decision of the community. They praised his kindness, citing how he paid school fees for his neighbours’ children without discriminating based on tribe.

However, Baba KK, as he is popularly known, declined the offer, quoting a Yoruba proverb, “Ilesanmi dun ju oye lo,” meaning “Better is a dry morsel with peace.”

This decision was made during a tumultuous time in Nigeria’s history, with General Sani Abacha’s military government formalising the “transition programme” announced on October 1, 1995. Local government elections were held in March 1996 on a “zero party” basis, but harassment of opposition activists persisted. Many were detained, including Frank Ovie Kokori, Chima Ubani, Abdul Oroh, and Tunji Abayomi.

Baba KK’s rejection of the offer may have been a wise decision, considering the political climate. His actions demonstrate a commitment to peace and principle over power and prestige. What a remarkable story of integrity and leadership!
