The Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU), University of Ibadan chapter, has condemned the attacks by some hoodlums on members of staff of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, on Tuesday.
In a statement by its Zonal Coordinator, Dr Ade Adejumo, ASUU also demanded that the police bring the perpetrators of the crime to book.
Suspected thugs on Tuesday evening invaded the institution and beat up its members of staff.
ASUU also called on members to resist any attempt by politicians to play ethnic politics with the lives of people who were being denied their entitlements and rights.
“We strongly appeal to our members to resist the temptations to be drawn into whatever political games politicians are playing to deliberately distract us from the focus of the current struggle.
“Let us remain calm and watchful, even in the face of extreme provocation. This is just a passing phase in the struggle and we shall survive it,” it stated.
The statement warned parents to keep their children and wards at home pending the duration of the strike embarked upon by its members in the institution.

It explained that the current crisis was a result of under-funding of the institution by the owner state governments of Osun and Oyo.

“Our struggle therefore is targeted at nudging the states back to the fulfillment of their obligations to the university.

“We hereby reiterate our position on the state of the crisis currently ravaging our dear institution, LAUTECH. The university is a public institution founded and financed with tax payers money.

“The university, therefore, belongs to the public, and it is held in trust by both the government of Oyo and Osun States,” it said.
