Arase urges Nigerians to expose irresponsible, corrupt officers

Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Solomon Arase, has tasked members of the public to report irresponsible and corrupt officers to higher police authorities for disciplinary action.
Arase, represented by the Deputy Inspector-General (DIG), Research and Planning, Mr Christopher Katso, gave the charge at a meeting with members of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) on Thursday in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
He said that the new concept of policing in Nigeria was geared toward adequate involvement of the public in line with international best practice.
“Effective policing cannot not be achieved without a very strong relationship with members of the public.
“One of the critical tools needed for effective policing is information and members of the public are in a better position to supply these information since police officers cannot be everywhere at all times,” he said.
The IGP maintained that the PCRC is one of the robust structures that would ensure the success of the new concept of policing in the county.
He urged members of the PCRC not to relent in their partnership with the police to curb crime and criminality in the country.
“Police has created avenues through which members of the public could give vital information anonymously and the confidentiality of informants will always be guaranteed.
“I want the members of the PCRC to always see police officers as partners, friends and relate with them to create the mutual understanding needed for effective policing,’’ he urged.
In his remarks, the state’s Deputy Chairman of the PCRC, Chief Ibrahim Okoshi, stressed the need for all information given by its members to be treated with utmost confidentiality in order not to jeopardise the synergy.
Okoshi assured the police of maximum cooperation at all times to ensure success in the delivery of its constitutional mandate of securing lives and property.
The Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa, Mr Sani Mohammed, thanked the police authority for its support in restoring peace to and reducing crime in the state.
Mohammed also lauded the collaboration of the PCRC members, which he noted is yielding great results.
He promised to strengthen ties with the PCRC in the state in anticipation of greater results for the benefit of all.
