APGA crisis deepens as factions inaugurate reconciliation committees

maxi_okwuThe All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) seems to be far from reaching a truce as the factions have inaugurated reconciliation committees and each claiming authenticity over the other.

The Victor Umeh-led faction inaugurated its committee three weeks ago, while the Maxi Ukwu-led APGA constituted a 14- member peace committee on Monday in Awka.

The development has set tongues wagging in Anambra on the authenticity or otherwise of these committees being charged with the same responsibility of reviewing the existing crisis.

Chieftains of the two factions, including the Deputy Chairman of APGA in Anambra, Chief Ifeanyi Udokwu, have reacted to the setting up of the reconciliation committees.

Udokwu, while reacting to the action of the Ukwu-led faction, said in Awka on Tuesday that anybody could set up a committee.

“Anybody can set up a reconciliation committee but it depends on the camp.

“They can come to us and say, we know so many things are wrong but we want to come back so that we can work together. We need reconciliation.

“It is in the best interest of the party to put our house in order, especially as the elections are coming so that we can put forward the best candidates that can win elections against other parties,” he said.

Another chieftain, Mr Emma Nweke, said that there was only one leadership in the party and the authority to set up a committee to unify members lies with it.

Nweke, who is also APGA governorship aspirant, stressed the need for members to ensure peace to move the party forward.

He urged members to stand by the truth “in this trying period and look to God for directions” as they played their roles in the peace building process.

“There is no ambiguity in the party leadership, Chief Victor Umeh, is the leader of the party in the eyes of the law and has set up a committee and people should not be misled. I don’t think any other committee is of any effect.

“I stand by the Umeh/Kwentoh leadership but I want to advise that the crisis in the party should not discourage party followers,” Nweke said.
