Apapa gridlock: Ambode urges FG to hasten completion of trailer parks, roads, link bridge

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State has urged the Federal Government to ensure speedy completion of trailer parks, adjoining roads and link bridge at the Apapa Tin-Can port.
Ambode spoke on Thursday during a tour of Apapa area of the state as part of efforts to find a lasting solution to the gridlock in the axis.
“The roads that lead to Apapa, Wharf and Tin-can Island actually belong to the Federal Government and the link bridge has been under construction in the last six years.
“I appeal to the Federal government to make sure that the contractor comes back to site,” he said.
Ambode decried the rate of indiscriminate parking of tankers and container trucks on the roads and bridges as he ordered immediate enforcement of traffic rules in the area.
“The gridlock in Apapa is multi-faceted and it is totally unacceptable that we will be having tankers and trailers on our bridges.
“It is not also acceptable that they will be blocking all roads leading to this area.
“We must do something immediately to alleviate the challenges residents and business owners are facing,” he said.
The governor also raised environmental concerns about the 57 tank farms operating around the port and said that a meeting would be held with the operators to find a lasting solution to the traffic situation.
Also during a tour of Ajah area of the state, Ambode said that immediate palliatives would be put in place to allow easy flow of traffic in the area.
“The government is seriously concerned about the level of suffering people are going through in this area.
“Although, we have all agreed that a flyover is needed, but it will take like 18 months to be delivered.
“The palliative measure is to put a task force in place to ensure a 24-hour enforcement of the traffic law,” Ambode said.
