Kano State Hisba Board said on Thursday that it had commenced preparations for the mass wedding of fourth batch of 1,000 widows and divorcees in the state.
The Director-General of the Board, Alhaji Abba Sufi, said in Kano that the preparations followed directives by Gov. Rabi’u Kwankwaso.
‘’The state Governor, Dr Rabi’u Kwankwaso, has given us the go-ahead to start preparations for the wedding of another batch of 1,000 widows and divorcees,’’ he said.
He said the wedding that would be conducted very soon, was part of the efforts of the administration to curtail prostitution and other social vices in the society.
The government had in the three previous batches, sponsored the mass wedding of 100, 250 and 1,000 widows and divorcees, on different occasions.
Sufi said the state government planned to ban street begging in the state, particularly by destitute females who constituted the larger percentage of beggars on the streets.
According to him, the state plans to repatriate destitute persons to their various local government areas and states of origin, especially those that were not from Kano State.
He said those from the state would be given N10,000 each as free capital to enable them to start small businesses of their choice.
“The state government has plans for the destitute women and other categories of beggars and this is the reason why it is planning to ban street begging in the state,’’ he said.
On child abuse, the Director-General said the board had handed over a number of such cases to National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for appropriate action.
He called on parents in the state to ensure proper upbringing of their children in order not to destroy their future.
