The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has urged politicians and other electorate in Anambra to avoid acts that can lead to violence as they go to the polls on Nov.16.
The National Chairman of APGA, Chief Victor Umeh, said this while speaking with newsmen on Friday in Awka.
Umeh urged all participants in the election process, especially contestants, to shun desperation and ensure peace so that people could freely elect the candidates of their choice.
He commended the security agencies for the proactive measures they had put in place to forestall any breakdown of law and order.
“People should shun desperation; if you are offering yourself for service, you should allow the people to decide who will govern them and if people refuse to give you their votes, you should go home.
“We want peace in Anambra so that at the end of the day the eventual winner will serve the people, irrespective of his party, religious or ethnic affiliation, ‘’ Umeh said.
There is a heavy presence of armed policemen at the state headquarters of INEC in Awka and adjoining roads from Aroma through Ekwueme Square, checking vehicular movement carrying out other routine security duties.
The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Abubakar, at a stakeholders meeting in Awka on Wednesday, promised to ensure peace and order in the state during the election.
According to him, in each of the zones of the state, a commissioner of police and an assistant-inspector-general of police will take charge as well as security agents from the State Security Service (SSS).
“The military has also deployed troops from the Nigerian Army to the three Senatorial Districts with more than 10 armoured personnel carriers and other vehicles, while two helicopters would be provided by the Nigerian Air Force.
“The Marine Police and the Navy will take charge of the water areas,” Abubakar said.
