An unconfirmed number of people have sustained injuries after a three-storey residential building collapsed in Amaokpala, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The privately owned building, which collapsed on Sunday night, reportedly accommodated students of the Federal Polytechnic Oko as well as other residents.
Amaokpala is located close to Oko, the community where the federal polytechnic is situated.
No official casualty figure had been released as of Monday, but injured occupants were taken to hospital for medical treatment.
Emergency teams were still searching the collapsed structure and assessing the extent of the incident.
Anambra State Commissioner for Urban Planning, Chijioke Ojukwu, confirmed the building collapse in a telephone conversation with the News Agency of Nigeria.
Ojukwu said rescue operations were continuing and promised that further information, including the number of casualties and other circumstances surrounding the collapse, would be released later.
The Federal Polytechnic Oko also clarified that the incident did not occur within the institution’s premises or its host community.
The institution’s Public Relations Officer, Dr Celestine Oguegbu, said the affected building was located in neighbouring Amaokpala.
Oguegbu added that the polytechnic was not in session because students had completed their examinations and were expected to have returned home.
However, he said the Rector and other senior officials visited the scene to support the rescue effort and determine whether any students were trapped or injured.
The management delegation included the institution’s Chief Security Officer and other staff members.
Oguegbu said no death had been confirmed as of the time the officials visited the site.
He added that those found with injuries had been transported to medical facilities while rescue personnel continued searching the rubble.
Authorities had yet to announce the cause of the collapse or disclose whether the structure had previously been marked as unsafe.
Further updates are expected after emergency workers complete their search and relevant state agencies conduct a preliminary assessment of the building.
