The Anambra Police Command has taken an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) into custody following a video circulating on social media in which he allegedly threatened to shoot any member of the public who records him on duty.

Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the arrest in a statement on Friday, explaining that the video depicts conduct unbecoming of a Nigerian Police officer. The officer is currently under investigation, and internal disciplinary proceedings have been initiated in line with the Nigerian Police ethical code.

As part of the investigation, the officer underwent a drug test to assist in determining the circumstances surrounding the incident. Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu condemned the behavior, emphasizing that the Nigerian Police is a disciplined institution that does not tolerate misconduct that could undermine public confidence.

The police command assured the public that the outcome of the disciplinary process would be made transparent. SP Ikenga stressed that officers found guilty of misconduct would face appropriate sanctions under existing laws and police regulations.

He also reminded operatives to maintain professionalism, emotional balance, and respect while carrying out their duties, especially in an era where their actions are subject to public scrutiny.

The incident reportedly followed a recent court ruling affirming the right of Nigerian citizens to record police officers performing their lawful duties.
