CSP Yakubu Zakari-Deba, the Chief Security Officer of Yobe Government House, has apologised for allegedly assaulting Mr Babagana Kolo, a reporter with the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), Damaturu.
Deba tendered his unreserved apology to the management of the NTA when he visited the station in Damaturu on Friday.
The CSO reportedly punched Kolo in his mouth during a commotion at the premises of the state House of Assembly, hours before Gov Mai Mala Buni presented the 2026 budget proposal.
Deba, who was visibly remorseful over the incident, said he was trying to control a large crowd from forcing its way into the gallery, when the unfortunate incident occurred.
“ I was directed to ensure the security of about 73 attendees of the budget presentation.
“ When my attention was drawn to the fact that some people were trying to flout the mandatory screening at the entrance, I quickly moved in to maintain law and order.
“ It was in that process that the unfortunate incident occurred. It was a mistake, and I apologise for it”, he said.
Mr Rajab Mohammed, Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ), Yobe Chapter, commended Deba for the maturity he demonstrated in recognising his error in judgement and apologising to his victim accordingly.
He, however, called on the CSO and other security operatives to always support journalists to perform their duties without any hindrance.
Mohammed also called for collaboration between journalists and security operatives, saying they should be partners in progress, not rivals.
Highlights of the occasion included group photographs and exchange of banters between the CSO and the journalist.
