The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi 111, has been appointed Chancellor of Crescent University, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The university was established 10 years ago.
A statement by the university’s Proprietor and renowned Jurist, Prince Bola Ajibola, noted the royal majesty’s high reputation and standing amongst monarchs within Nigeria, and one that the institution is confident will serve its objectives and interests well.
It also congratulated the paramount ruler on his meritorious 45 years service on the throne.
“We celebrate with people of Oyo Kingdom, Nigeria and Africa at large
on your maintaining peace and stability with your realm”.
In his acceptance letter, Oba Adeyemi said he has for the past 10 years been following with keen interest the contributions of the university to the development of education in the country, especially at the tertiary level.
“ I made bold to say that the summary of my observation in the last decade is that Crescent University is not only creative but innovative as a centre of learning that impacts sound and qualitative education to our youths”.
Alaafin added that looking objectively at the background of the university vis-à-vis the character of the Proprietor,” one cannot expect anything less than such a creative and imaginative person; an international jurist per excellence who had carved a niche for himself as a pride of the black race by distinguishing himself excellently as the President of the International Court of Justice” .
While accepting the offer with total humility, the paramount ruler assured the university Board of Trustees, the Governing Council, staff and students that he would put his 12 years experience as pioneer Chancellor of Uthman Dan Fodio University, Sokoto into play as Chancellor of the Crescent University.
With the new appointment, Alaafin becomes the first traditional ruler in the country to be chancellor of three universities.
They include University of Maiduguri, Borno State; Bells University, Ota, and Crescent University, Abeokuta, both in Ogun State.
