godswill_akpabio_official_photoGov. Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom on Tuesday in Uyo praised the Federal Government for indicating interest in the development of the Ibaka deep seaport.

Akpabio made the commendation while presenting President Goodluck Jonathan’s address at the city’s township stadium to mark Nigeria’s 53rd Independence Day celebrations.

The governor said federal government’s support for the development of the sea port was commendable as it would further enhance employment and job-creation for Nigerian youths.

“For the proposed Ibaka deep seaport, we must appreciate the federal government for its interest and decision to partner with us and the international investors to bring it into fruition.

“When completed, the Ibaka deep seaport will enhance maritime security and economy, while job opportunities for thousands of Nigerians will be created,’’ he said.

Akpabio said underdevelopment anywhere in the world was a threat to development everywhere, pointing out that this had guided his administration’s activities.

“Together, we have given hope to our children and to our country and we have laid the foundation for growth and prosperity.

“Our free and compulsory education programme for all the young people in the state is to fill the leadership vacuum in our country,” he said.

The governor paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the struggle of keeping Nigeria united as a nation.

“Peace and unity is very important as it will bring about development and prosperity in the country,’’ he said.

Akpabio urged for support for the country’s leaders, saying Jonathan’s leadership in the country had brought about institutional reforms and gender equality.

Earlier, the state’s Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Dr Gloria Edet, had commended the march past by selected school children in the state.

“It is a testimony of the fact that they were appreciative of the state government’s free and compulsory education programme,’’ she said.

The occasion witnessed marchpast and cultural dance by school children and pupils in the state.
