Bayelsa United Football Club of Yenagoa, on Sunday in Benin emerged the 2021 Aiteo Cup champions after defeating Nasarawa United FC of Lafia via a penalty kicks shootout.

The game went into penalty shootout after the match’s full time play had ended 2-2 at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.

The Nigeria National League (NNL) side put up a scintillating performance to defeat the Nigeria Professional Football League (NFPL) side and win the prize money of N25 million.

The match played under the stadium’s floodlights had among its spectators Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State.

Okardi Inikurogha and Emo James scored in the 19th and 35th minutes respectively for the winners.

Ohanachom and Aliyu Abdullahi scored also in the 19th and 26th minutes respectively for Nasarawa United.

The resultant penalty kicks shootout after 90 minutes of play saw the state-owned Bayelsa United winning 4-3.

The win made it a season double for Bayelsa as the state-owned female clubside, Bayelsa Queens, had earlier in the day at the same venue triumphed.

They won the female version of the Aiteo Cup Competition by defeating FC Robo of Lagos 4-2.

Bayelsa United are emulating the success of the now defunct Ocean Boys of Yenagoa in winning the Cup.

They are to represent Nigeria in the 2021/2022 CAF Confederation Cup by this victory.
