The Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) has warned truck drivers to desist from repairing broken-down vehicles on the highway to reduce road accidents.
Mr Ajibade Adekunle, the South-West Zonal Commander of TRACE, gave the warning in an interview on Tuesday in Ota.
Adekunle said that the crash that claimed 10 lives on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, on Tuesday morning, could have been avoidable if the broken-down vehicle had been towed off the road.
Adekunle said that the Corps Commander of TRACE, Mr Semi Ogunyemi, has mandated all its personnel to embark on 24-hours surveillance patrol across the state in order to eliminate road accidents.
The Zonal Commander of TRACE enjoined motorists to drive carefully during this yuletide, particularly near failed portion of the highway.
He identified human error as a major factor contributing to numerous road traffic crashes that have occurred recently in the state
Adekunle said that the two accidents involving motorcycles and trucks on Dec. 8, could have been averted if simple safety rules and regulations had been adhered to.
“The TRACE commander is not happy with the recent crashes in the state and has directed the personnel of the agency to embark on intensive sensitization to educate the public.
“We are therefore appealing to motorists to contact TRACE and FRSC for appropriate actions to be taken when their vehicles develop fault on the highway to prevent unnecessary loss of lives,” he said.
Adekunle admonished them to desist from repairing their broken down vehicles on the road to prevent oncoming vehicles ramming into them.
He implored motorists to refrain from drunk-driving and driving against traffic to avoid mishaps during the festive season.
