The Abia project coordinating office of the Livelihood Improvement Family Enterprises for Niger Delta (LIFE-ND), on Friday, trained and sensitized farmers on the importance of insurance cover for their agricultural value chains.

The beneficiaries, drawn from the project’s four selected commodities value chain of poultry, oil palm processing and marketing,  cassava and rice production, participated in the training at LIFE-ND Secretariat in Umuahia.

The Resource Person, Mr Ndubueze Anamelechi, from the Nigerian Agricultural Insurance Corporation (NAIC), taught the participants how they could be insured, process and market their agricultural products as well as the company’s insurance policy, amongst others.

Anamelechi, a marketing officer at NAIC, explained how they could get their claims in the event of losses  or disasters and the necessary documents they required.

The Financial Inclusion Specialist for LIFE-ND, Mr Lucky Ubani, said that the purpose of the training was to educate the farmers and make them understand how insurance works and how they could process their claims.

Ubani said: “We discovered that many of our beneficiaries incur losses, which they would not reclaim in the course of their businesses.

“Some of them do not insure their products, maybe as a result of the lack of knowledge of insurance.

“So, we decided to invite NAIC to speak to them about the processes involved in insuring the products.”

A participant, Chinweke Nworgu from Ugwunagbo Local Government Area, who is into oil palm marketing, expressed delight over the training.

“We have been taught about how we can manage our products, market them and how we can write our claim in case of losses,” Nworgu said.

LIFE-ND is funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development, in collaboration with the Federal Government and those of the Niger Delta region.
