Sixty-four years ago, a Panamanian was born with boxing pride who would go on to enjoy world reference in Roberto “hands of stone” Durán. The WBA family wishes him a very happy birthday.

Duran was born in 1951, in Panama. He had brief amateur period in his country and in February 1968, he made his Professional debut with a unanimous decision showing signs of what he would become in the future.

Eight victories before the limit in 1968, five more the following year, and one by decision. These results repeated until 1972 when he had the first opportunity to fight a world title against Ken Buchanan.

The fight took place at Madison Square Garden in New York, and the Panamanian won by TKO in 13 rounds. He won the World Boxing Association lightweight title.

That day began the legend of five world titles, becoming the first latino to accomplish that feat. At the time, with much effort he became an Idol, considered among the best pound-for-pound of that moment and one of the best of his time.
An idol to many, not only in Panama but in the world, he ended his career with 104 victories, 69 by KO, no draws and 16 defeats in 33 years of professional life.
