Women appointment should be on merit, not gender basis, says Bulkachuwa

President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, says that women should be given appointments at all levels based on merit and not on gender basis.
Bulkachuwa made the call in Abuja on Tuesday when she received the National Executives of the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) in her office.
“I have always maintained that women should be appointed on merit and not on gender basis.
“Women should always work hard to get what they want. They should not fold their hands and wait for appointment to come to them,’’ she said.
The Court of Appeal president advised women to remember their primary responsibilities of taking care of their families while pursuing their career.
She, however, urged FIDA to make Nigeria proud by defending women and children as well as empower them to be self-reliant.
The court president promised to operate an open door policy with FIDA and equally assist them with a functional secretariat to facilitate its activities.
Earlier, the FIDA National President, Mrs Inime Aguma, said the federation was committed to sensitising the public on cases that involved women and children.
“For us to achieve our strategic framework, we need a functional secretariat.
“We want you to join us make our institution to be reckoned with to alleviate the plight of women and children in the country,’’ she appealed.
