The Chartered Institute of Transportation Administration of Nigeria (CIOTA) says it is committed to ensuring professionalism and regulating of operators in the transportation sector as part of measures to reduce road crashes in the country.
The CIOTA Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Dr Segun Obayendo, stated this in an interview with newsmen on the sideline of the North-West Zonal Conference on Transportation it organised on Tuesday in Katsina .
The conference had the theme: “Promoting Ethics and Professionalism in the Transportation Sector: A Key to Economic Development”.
He said that CIOTA was the pioneer transport professional body in Nigeria recognised by the National Assembly Act 27 (2019), and assented to by the former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Obayendo said that the conference was part of the campaigns to ensure that transportation was professionalised and regulated in the country.
He said, “It is supposed to be well regulated, trained the operators, certify and regulate them first before they join.
“No documents or regulatory framework guiding us in the sector. Even if we have them in states, those states are doing what they think is right.
“We need to have a uniform national focus of where we are going, that will help us as a country.”
Obayendo stated that they have already compiled a National Land Transportation Policy, which was now waiting for the approval of the Federal Executive Council.
“When we have it at the national level, it is easier for the states to domesticate it,” he said
