The Adamawa chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), says it would do everything possible to ensure that the indefinite industrial action, scheduled to commence on October 3, was fully implemented across the State.
Mr.Emmanuel Fashe, state chairman of the union, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yola on Saturday, that his NLC chapter has formed a formidable monitoring committee which comprises experienced civil servants who were fully exposed on unionism activities.
Fashe reiterated the commitment of the group in ensuring that the strike was implemented to the letter as all public and private places would be shut down.
He explained that the strike was necessitated by the current economic hardship being experienced by Nigerians due to the removal of petroleum subsidy by the federal government.
He said the subsidy removal has raised prices of goods and other essential commodities by about 300 per cent while workers’ pay remain stagnant.
According to him, the union is, among other things, demanding for a wage award for civil servants and other concrete palliative measures for Nigerians.
“The union was not pushing for an increase in minimum wage but wage award where some reasonable amount would be added to the workers as palliatives,” he said.
“Salary increase is usually after every five years and by 2024 we would demand an upward review of the minimum wage,” he added.
The chairman called on the 28 affiliate unions of the NLC and the 9 affiliate groups of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to ensure that the strike was fully implemented.
The NLC has resolved to embark on the nationwide strike by Oct. 3, 2023, due to the removal of petroleum subsidy by the federal government.
