Gov. Hope Uzodimma of Imo has condemned the moral decay at Imo State University (IMSU), urging the Governing Board to find practical solutions to the institution’s deep-rooted problems.
Uzodimma made this appeal while receiving the Chairman and members of the university’s Governing Board at the Government House, Owerri, on Tuesday.
The governor decried the high level of corruption in IMSU, insisting that the status quo must change. He said, “What is very endemic is corruption and lack of staff commitment.”
He criticised the practice of admitting students who struggle to graduate within four years, calling for an investigation and a more structured admission process.
Uzodimma further urged the Board to develop a work plan to encourage investment in IMSU and tackle moral decadence by prioritising student welfare.
He assured the Board that his administration was ready to support the university and provide staff incentives, provided the institution maintained a conducive environment for investors.
“I can even allow you to fix your salary, but there must be money. It is not charity,” he stated.
The governor stressed that a well-functioning system would attract investors through Public-Private Partnerships, boosting revenue and benefiting all parties.
Uzodimma advocated for automation and computerisation to improve accuracy in student enrolment records and staff payroll management.
He urged the Board to conduct a needs assessment to determine IMSU’s operational costs and revenue potential for financial stability.
He tasked the Board and Management with reassessing the situation and finding lasting solutions, comparing it to diagnosing a patient before treatment.
Earlier, the Chairman of the IMSU Governing Board, Prof. Philip Ogbonna, thanked the governor for his appointment and updated him on the Board’s progress since January 2025.
Ogbonna revealed that the Board had conducted assessments and gained insights to elevate the institution’s standing.
Key findings included a system overhaul, accreditation of the Colleges of Medicine and Engineering, staff promotions, welfare improvements, and new employment opportunities.
He requested the governor’s support in digitalising the university system, combating corruption, and enhancing students’ digital skills for better job prospects.
Other Board members present included the Founder of Zinox Computers, Mr Leo Stan Eke, alongside Mr Chums Nnaji, Mr Godwin Obodo, Mr Chuks Okoronkwo, and Mrs Nkechi Mbachu.
The Vice-Chancellor of IMSU, Prof. Uche Chukwumaeze, led other principal university officers to the meeting.
