Soun of Ogbomosho, Oba Oladunni Oyewumi, has admonished staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to be upright and patriotic in their duties, saying that this will enhance the nation’s democracy.
Oba Oyewumi gave the admonition on Wednesday when the Oyo State Resident Electoral Commissioner(REC), Mr Mutiu Agboke, and other workers of the commission visited the palace of the monarch in Ogbomosho.
Oyewumi said the growth of the nation’s democracy should be a priority to every Nigerian and that conduct of credible, free and fair elections would go a long way in enhancing democratic growth.
He implored the electoral body to be upright and unbiased in carrying out its constitutional responsibility.
In his response, the REC reiterated the commitment of the commission under the leadership of Prof. Mahmood Abubakar to conduct credible elections in 2019.
He said that the commission would not hesitate to sanction or reprimand any erring staff.
”My appeal to the royal fathers and parents is to prevail on our youths and children to shun thuggery and hooliganism before, during and after elections period.
”None of the politicians will allow his or her kids to be involved in thuggery; so, do not allow your children to be used.”
Agboke further disclosed that 92,499 Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) had yet to be collected by residents of the five local government areas in Ogbomosho land.
The local governments are Ogbomosho North, Ogbomosho South, Ogo-Oluwa, Orire and Surulere.
He urged those yet to collect their PVCs to visit INEC offices in their areas and those yet to register to use the two-week extension to do so.
Agboke also led staff of the commission to meet community leaders, representatives of political parties, security agents, religious bodies and other stakeholders from Ogbomosho land.
