Tension in Oyo community over chieftaincy row, Alaafin sets up panel

The people of Jabata community in Oyo-East local government area of Oyo State are at daggers drawn over chieftaincy dispute.
In 2016, one Wakili Adekunle was appointed and installed as the new Aare-Ago of Jabata by head of the community following the death of the former title holder.
This decision was vehemently objected by members of the ruling family known as Ada family, who described the decision as a travesty of Aare-Ago Jabata Chieftaincy Ruling House.
Since then, the serene community had been witnessing uproar, protests, mutual mistrusts, and acrimony till today.
The continued disaffection by enraged members of the Ada ruling family was a petition letter written to the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi 111, calling for his intervention to avert the looming violence in the community.
In the letter dated 18th of January 2017, signed by head of the ruling family, Pa Salami Adewale and other members, there are three sections in the family which transformed to three ruling houses.
The three sections include Oyewo, Ikujeniya and Ogunsola.
It stated that all the three ruling houses are one big family called
and known as Ada, and that it is from any of these ruling houses that
previous Aare- Ago  Jabata was installed.
It added further that since the time that the family arrived at the
present Oyo created by the late Alaafin Atiba, the Ada family had, in
his roll call, eleven Aare Ago Jabata, while the Aare Ago Jabata
chieftaincy had always been installed from Ada ruling house by
previous head of the community [Baale] on the authority and approval
of the Alaafin.
The letter reads further, ‘’ Lakanla house from Jabata had never been
installed as the Aare Ago Jabata right from the time of  late Alaafin
Atiba till the time of the incumbent monarch, Oba Adeyemi 111. It is,
therefore, painfully surprising that one Wakili Adekunle from Lakanla
house who is neither patrilineally nor  matrilineally related to Aare
Ago Jabata Chieftaincy Family was installed as Aare Ago Jabata’’.
This, the family described as ‘’daylight robbery’’, and therefore
urged the Alaafin to save their heritage from going into oblivion, by
installing any member of the authentic family as the 12th Aare Ago
Jabata.
The Ada family also challenged Lakanla’s family to show or prove, such
as relics, as previous occupant of the traditional stool of Aare Ago
Jabata.
Consequently, in order forestall breakdown of law and order, and to
give room for justice and fairness to prevail, the Alaafin has sets up
a seven-man panel of enquiry to unravel the circumstances surrounding
the choice of the incumbent Aare- Ago Jabata, whose family has neither
been registered traditionally, nor customarily confirmed to present a
candidate for the Aare Ago chieftaincy title.
The panel which has one week to sit would also receive memoranda from
interested parties and members of the public through the Secretary to
the panel.
The panel of enquiry headed by Archbishop Ayo Ladigbolu,
include members of the Oyo Traditional Council (Oyo Mesi), while Prince Totoola Adeyemi is to serve as Secretary.
