Taiwan is an indispensable part of China and has never been a country, a spokesperson of the Chinese mainland said on Wednesday.
Spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, An Fengshan, said at a regular press conference in Beijing.
“It is a basic fact and the legal basis for cross-Strait relations, and it has never been and cannot be changed,’’ Fengshan said.
He made the remarks in response to a question concerning a Taiwan official’s recent remarks, saying that relations across the Taiwan Strait are special state-to-state relations.
According to Fengshan, the Chinese mainland and Taiwan belong to one and the same China.
He noted that the false “two states” theory has already been rejected by the people of the Chinese mainland and Taiwan, as well as the international community.
“Nobody or organisation will succeed in seeking Taiwan independence through any form,’’ Fengshan said.
