Stakeholders suggest ways to check unruly behaviours among students in Oyo

Following a rampage embarked on by students of some secondary schools in Oyo town which resulted in the death of one person and destruction of multi-million naira properties, stakeholders have called on parents to be more dedicated to their children’s upbringing, in order to become responsible citizens.
This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of an emergency town hall meeting held at Atiba hall in Oyo town.
The town hall meeting, convened by the four local governments (Afijio, Atiba, Oyo-East and Oyo-West) was attended by Principals of secondary
schools, Local Inspectors of Education, Director, Teaching Service
Commission, Parents Teachers Associations, Baales, chiefs and
religious leaders.
It expressed dismay on how parents have abdicated their
responsibilities, by failing to give their children proper upbringing
and inculcate moral and religious teachings on them.
The communiqué also identified home breakings which led to single
parenting as one of the factors responsible for unruly behaviours
among children, adding that a situation whereby parents are separated
from one another leads bearing of children that are both untrained and
intractable who constitute nuisances to the society.
It called for erections of gates and wall fences, clearing of
surrounding bushes as well as employment of capable security personnel
to check infiltration of miscreants in schools’ premises.
Introduction of guidance and counseling units in schools was equally
given consideration, in order to breed the students for future
prospects.
“Disciplines in schools should be invigorated. Schools managements
should be alive to their responsibilities by applying strict
enforcement of disciplines on students at all times. This will check
waywardness and anti-social behaviours among the students”.
The communiqué jointly signed by the Chairman, Oyo Metropolitan
Development Association, retired Arch-Bishop Ayo Ladigbolu, and the
four Local Governments’ caretaker Chairmen, lauded Governor Abiola
Ajimobi’s pro-activeness and initiative in reforming the education
sector.
It equally appreciated the government’s giant stride in ensuring that
education is no longer for the lazy and indolent students, but those
who are intelligent, brilliant and dedicated to their studies.
