The Sokoto Eastern Zone Development Association (SEZDA) has vehemently denied allegations of receiving N360 million at its appeal fund in January 2022.
Prof. Muazu Shamaki, the Secretary-General of SEZDA, on Tuesday described the claims as mischievous attempts to politicize the association’s well-intentioned efforts toward developing the zone.
He emphasized that SEZDA was a non-partisan organization committed to collaborating with relevant authorities to combat security challenges in the eight Local Government Areas affected by banditry and kidnapping in the state.
Shamaki stated, “Our activities have always been transparent to the public. During the association’s inauguration, we received various pledges, with the highest being N100 million from the state government.
“While the government fulfilled 50 per cent of its pledge, other stakeholders collectively contributed over N100 million to our cause,” he said.
The don also highlighted SEZDA’s achievements, which included the construction of schools, clinics, and covering the medical treatment of at least 10 injured victims, among other forms of assistance.
“Before the unfortunate passing of SEZDA Chairman, late Prof. Nasiru Gatawa, we had proposed the purchase of essential commodities for distribution to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and other vulnerable individuals in the zone.
“With the continued commitment of our leaders, particularly our Grand Patron, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, we remain dedicated to achieving our goals,” he added.
Alhaji Aminu Almustapha, a member of the Sokoto State House of Assembly representing Sabon Birni North, insisted that the funds, amounting to N360 million, should be released to aid victims of banditry in IDP camps and individuals receiving medical care in hospitals across the state.
He emphasized the urgency of using the funds to alleviate the hardships faced by the people in the eight LGAs most affected by banditry in Sokoto’s eastern zone.
“We have over 50,000 IDPs from the zone scattered across the state’s capital, as we also grapple with the highest number of out-of-school children and widows roaming the streets of Sokoto.
“Therefore, it is imperative that we address this situation with the resources available to us,” he stated.
The LGAs covered by the association include: Goronyo, Gada, Gwadabawa, Isa, Illela, Sabon Birni, Rabah, and Wurno.
