Russia is delivering 27 tones of aid to the Gaza Strip, according to the Civil Defense Ministry in Moscow.

An Ilyushin Il-76 aircraft took off with the cargo from Ramenskoye airport near Moscow, the ministry said on Thursday.

It said the delivery, which includes foodstuffs such as flour, sugar, rice and noodles would be handed over to the Red Crescent in Egypt.

Gaza’s only crossing with Egypt remains mainly closed in spite mounting calls for Cairo to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid into the coastal area, which has been pounded by Israeli airstrikes.

Supplies for people in the Gaza Strip, which Israel has completely sealed off, are running low.

Egypt initially wants to allow up to 20 trucks through the Rafah border crossing.

Israel, which is trying to bomb Islamist Hamas in the coastal strip, has promised not to obstruct humanitarian aid deliveries from Egypt.
