Saudi Arabia’s Kariman Abuljadayel became her nation’s first ever female athlete in the 100 metres at the Olympic Games in Rio.
Abuljadayel finished seventh in heat three of the preliminaries, clocking 14.61 seconds.
And while that wasn’t enough to send her through to the next stage, she created a slice of history for a nation that had previously barred women from competing at the Olympics until London 2012.
She is part of a four-strong female contingent at the Rio Games, with campaigners urging Saudi Arabia to send more to future games.
Sarah Attar, who is part of this summer’s team, received a rousing reception at London 2012 when she became the first female to represent Saudi Arabia.
