The U.S. launched a ‘revolutionary’ new weather satellite from Cape Canaveral in Florida on Saturday, the Washington Post reported.
The GOES-R satellite will be able to see hurricanes and blizzards with higher resolution than any other U.S. satellite of its kind, according to the report.
Scans will take less time and be transmitted faster, and severe storms will be more predictable through what the newspaper called “lightning mapping.”
GOES-R is the first in the new series of satellites to launch. The report called it “a game-changer for weather forecasting.”
It joins an international network of satellites that share data freely among nearly 200 countries.
