International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has organised a three-day First Aid training program for journalists in Yobe.
Mr Mohammed AbdulRashid, the Head of ICRC Office, Damaturu, said the training program was aimed at equipping journalists with skills to become first responders in addition to their primary responsibility.
He said the ICRC recognized journalists’ frontline role in conflict situations.
AbdulRashid added that journalists often found themselves providing immediate assistance before victims were taken to hospitals for further treatment.
He also acknowledged the crucial role journalists play in raising awareness about the humanitarian services provided by the Red Cross in Nigeria.
AbdulRashid highlighted the importance of accurate reporting to prevent misinformation and disinformation in relation to humanitarian crises and conflicts.
He, therefore, urged journalists to fact-check information before publishing, saying that would contribute to reducing the spread of false information.
Addressing the participants, Mr Ibrahim Dachia, the acting Branch Secretary urged the participants to make the best use of knowledge acquired during the training.
He emphasized the need for journalists to project the commendable work of the Red Cross Society in the state and Nigeria as a whole
