After two previous unsuccessful bids for the Summer Olympic Games of the 2016 and 2020, Qatar may bid for the 2028 Games, a top official of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) has revealed.
A Qatar-based Magazine `Doha Stadium plus’, quoted the Secretary-General of QOC, Thani Abdulrahaman Al kuwari, to have said that Qatar now had the experience and facilities to launch a bid for the 2028 Games.
A reporter, who covered the just-concluded 79th edition of the International Sports Association (AIPS) Congress in Qatar, also quotes the magazine as saying that the bid process could start as early as 2019.
The QOC announced its plan to bid for the 2028 Olympics to no fewer than 230 journalists in attendance at that AIPS Congress.
The is coming at a time that the various stadiums are under construction, ahead of the 2022 World Cup that Qatar has secured the right to host.
The various projects are to be completed in 2019.
Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro is scheduled to host the 2016 Olympic Games, while Tokyo would host the 2020 Games.
Currently, Qatar has been constructing new roads and rail lines as well as upgrading other infrastructure ahead of a series of events lined up.
These include the 2017 World Athletics Championship and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
According to the magazine, Qatar has hosted a series of big events including men’s World Handball Championship, World Boxing Championships and the International Paralympic Committee Athletics Championship, over the last one year.
The AIPS congress ended on Feb. 10 (Wednesday) in Doha.
