Jonathan

goodluck_jonathan5President, Goodluck Jonathan has offered words of commendation to the team following Sunday’s 2-1 win over Ethiopia in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying play-off game in Addis Ababa.

Emmanuel Emenike’s brace helped the African champions snatch a dramatic victory over their impressive hosts at the Addis Ababa stadium and the Nigerian President has now moved to congratulate the players.

Presidential spokesman, Rueben Abati who disclosed this explained that the President was pleased with Sunday’s 2-1 win over the Walia Antelopes and commended the team on behalf of the Nigerian nation.

“Pres. Jonathan thanks the Super Eagles for doing Nigeria proud. He congratulates them on their victory against Ethiopia #TeamNigeria,” he tweeted via @abati1990.

President Jonathan has been vocal in his support of the Super Eagles and stopped by to watch the team’s first training session in Addis Ababa on Saturday.

“I am sure that you will not only qualify for the World Cup but we are going there not to add up the numbers but to make an impact at the championship”, the President said after the session.

Nigeria’s place at the 2014 World Cup now seems all but assured as Ethiopia will need an outright win in Calabar to stand any chance of upstaging the applecart and hoist their flag at the world’s most prestigious football tournament instead.

Ethiopia has only beaten Nigeria once in eight attempts.
