At least two Pakistani soldiers were killed by terrorists at a check post along the border with Iran, the military said on Thursday.

A group of terrorists attacked the border post in the Kech district of Balochistan, the military said.

It said: “Security forces have launched an immediate sanitization operation in the area and are in communication with Iranian authorities across the border as well to deny terrorists any opportunity to escape.’’

The military’s media wing ISPR said in a statement.

Pakistan and Iran share more than 900 kilometers of border.

There have been several security incidents in the past.

Balochistan province is regularly targeted by Islamist militants, sectarian groups and nationalist separatists.

The attack came amid a surge in violence after the collapse of peace talks between Islamabad and Taliban militants hiding in Afghanistan.

The Pakistani Taliban had killed around 80,000 people in decades of violence.

They have been pushed back from strongholds on the Afghan border in a series of offensives since 2014.

They have been seeking to regroup after the fall of Kabul to the Afghan Taliban.
