Oyo students arraigned for arson, assault

Some of the students suspected to have been involved in the destruction of school properties in Oyo, Oyo State were arraigned before Chief Magistrate’s Court 2 on Thursday.
Aged between 14 and 25, the 26 students were accused of destroying public properties and conducted themselves in a manner likely to breach peace.
Their charge sheets were signed by Officer-in-charge, Legal and Prosecution, Oyo State Police Command, Superintendent Fawole Funke.
The suspects, in three batches, were all males.
The first batch of 10 students were charged with destroying
electronic gadgets valued at over N1 million.
The offences were punishable under sections 451 and 249 [d] of the criminal code Cap 38 Volume 11 Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria 2000.
The second batch comprising 13 students were accused of arson, malicious damage, conduct likely to cause violence at the Community High School, Isale-Oyo and Oba Adeyemi High School.
The offences were punishable under 443 of the criminal code Cap 38 Volume 1 Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria 2000.
The last batch of three students were charged with destroying properties at Anglican Secondary School, Ajagba.
Offences were punishable under sections 516 and 80 of the criminal code Cap 38 Volume 11, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria 2000.
In her ruling, the presiding Chief Magistrate, Mrs O.O. Ogunkanmi, granted bail of N50,000 and two sureties in the like sum to each of the first batch of suspects.
The case was adjourned till January 10, 2017.
On the second batch of suspects, prosecuting and defence counsel argued on whether or not the Chief Magistrate Court has jurisdiction to try arson case.
Ruling on the matter, Mrs Ogunkanmi ordered the suspects to be kept in police custody at Iyaganku, Ibadan till next week Monday when the court will give its verdict on jurisdiction.
Similar ruling was given to the third batch of suspects.
The suspects include Ogunwole Ifadare (19), Tajudeen Ibrahim (15), Olanrewaju Sodiq [15], Fasasi Roheeb [17], Olalekan Afeez [17], Taiwo Moyo [16], Oladejo Soliu [17], Adejare Rilwan [18], Ajisafe Basit [18], Oluokun Joel [22], Fagbemiro Sunday [16], Shittu Roheeb [16], Adebayo Olamide [17], and Soliu Ibrahim [19].
Others are Tiamiyu Ibrahim [20], Bilahu Ramon [25], Ahmed Salami [21], Ogunniyi Sunday [15], Fatai Sodiq [21], Wasiu Ridwan [21], Mustapha Bolaji [22], Babalola Isaiah [15], Adekunle Aliu [17], Salami Wakeel [25], Taofiki Ibrahim [14], and Kolade Sheu Tijani [21].
