The Oyo State Government has issued a weather and flood advisory, urging residents to take precautionary steps as the 2026 rainy season approaches.
The warning was delivered in Ibadan by the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, who stressed the importance of complying with official flood prevention guidelines.
Aderinto explained that the government is intensifying efforts to minimise flood risks through proactive environmental strategies and early preparedness.
He noted that the ministry is working in partnership with the Oyo State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), while also utilising flood alert systems developed under the World Bank-backed Ibadan Urban Flood Management Project.
As part of ongoing flood control measures, the government has stepped up the clearing of drainage channels, rivers, and waterways across the state.
The commissioner said the desilting exercise began during the dry season and will continue into the rainy period to ensure smooth water flow and prevent blockages.
He added that sustained environmental interventions in recent years have significantly reduced the impact of flooding in many parts of the state.
Residents living in flood-prone areas, especially near riverbanks and drainage paths, were advised to relocate to safer locations to avoid potential disasters.
Aderinto also urged the public to remain alert, follow verified information from government sources, and report illegal structures or activities obstructing waterways.
He further called on farmers to pay close attention to forecasts by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which has projected heavy rainfall patterns for 2026.
According to him, the expected rainfall may include dry spells and shifting climate conditions that could disrupt planting schedules and crop yields.
The commissioner warned farmers against premature planting, advising them to wait for official guidance before beginning agricultural activities.
