Former Military Governor of Lagos State, General Olagunsoye Oyinlola (rtd), has been accused of a plot to terminate the life of a Lagos businessman, Adeolu Oyinlola,
over a property worth $150,000.
The businessman has also petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, over the conduct of Commissioner of Police (CP) Akin Fakorede.
Fakorede was accused, in the petition dated November 18, 2025, of compromising and unlawfully releasing confidential police documents of his case to Olagunsoye Oyinlola, who is also a former governor of Osun State, in the case involving an alleged threat to Adeolu’s life and fraud.
Another petition, dated November 18, 2025, was sent to the Chairman of Police Service Commission (PSC).
Documents allegedly leaked to Oyinlola included the administrative copy of Adeolu’s petition filed on February 4, 2025, and the statement made by the former governor during police investigation.
In the petition, he wrote, “I submitted, through my lawyers, a petition dated 4th February, 2025, in respect of a case of threat to my life by Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola and for obtaining property worth $150,000 from me by false pretence”.
He said the matter was assigned to the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Unit, led by Fakorede, who, according to him, took personal charge of the investigation and reached the conclusion that Oyinlola had no case to answer.
“I registered my displeasure with the conclusion arrived at by DCP Akin Fakorede in the course of his investigation of the aforementioned petition in a correspondence of 21st March, 2025, wherein my lawyers highlighted our misgivings with the said investigation and further requested that certified true copies of the statements made to the Police by the Complainant and the Suspect be released to me.”
He said the police had not released the requested documents to him, yet he stumbled on photocopies of both the police-minuted administrative copy of his petition and the suspect’s statement being circulated by the suspect to some members of the public in his hometown, Okuku, Osun State.
“Till date, I have not received the said statements from the Police. To my consternation, I stumbled on photocopies of the Police administrative copy of my petition, minuted on by the Police, as well as Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola’s statement, dated 10th March, 2025, in respect of our petition of 4th February, 2025, being circulated by the Suspect (for reasons best known to him) to some members of the public in our hometown, Okuku, Osun State,” Oyinlola stated.
“The referenced Police administrative copy of my petition and Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola’s statement to the Police were not certified.
“This means that the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Unit, headed by CP Akin Fakorede, made photocopies of the said documents and clandestinely released them to the suspect without certification.”
The businessman further alleged that the petition had been altered before it was released.
“To underscore my misgivings, the petition marked Annexure “A” was tampered with to produce the petition in Annexure “C” (which was released to Suspect), as evidenced in the change of position, as well as the design, of the acknowledgement stamp of the IGP’s secretariat on one and the same document.
“Furthermore, the use of Tippex correction fluid on the referenced document clearly indicates untoward tampering,” he said.
The petitioner is calling for a full investigation into CP Fakorede’s handling of the matter.
“I hereby restate my earlier demand for the said CP Akin Fakorede to be investigated for the perfunctory, not to say intentionally shoddy, manner my petition dated 4th February, 2025, was handled.”
He also renewed his request for the police to provide him with the certified copies of the statements he and the suspect made to enable him pursue legal action.
“I further demand that the police release to me, certified copies of the statements made to the Police by my humble self and Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, so that I can “seek civil remedy” in accordance with the unsolicited advice of CP Akin Fakorede when he was dismissing my petition,” Oyinlola said.

“I shared the Police documents that Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola circulated in our hometown
(Okuku, Osun State), with a retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) friend of
mine, and he pointed out that a suspect’s statement to the Police ought to be taken “under
caution”, when he saw the statement that was smuggled to suspect (Annexure A).
According to him, the statement wouldn’t have been admissible in Court, if the case had
progressed that far. Please note also that the bottom part of the second page of the referenced statement was left completely blank! In effect, the suspect’s statement was not
even taken.
In hindsight, DCP (as he then was) Akin Fakorede and his Unit actually had no plan of taking the statement of the suspect, because well after my own statement had been
recorded, early one Sunday morning, I received a call from the Investigating Police Officer
(PO), summoning me to Abuja the following day for the “Head of the Unit to hear from both
parties”. Without having to think, I saw through their ploy and told the IPO to tell his “Oga” that they cannot be putting unnecessary pressure on me, the Complainant/Petitioner, and that what they needed to do was to first take his statement. nowing what I now know, if 1
had made myself available as they scheduled, even the useless statement the suspect
recorded would not have been taken Additionally, the letter of invitation to Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola says in paragraph 3 “On
arrival, please call the Head of the unit on GSM No. 08066129607 to enable a protocol officer guide you to the venue of the meeting.” (Annexure B). I am shocked, surprised and
disappointed that a suspect got such preferential treatment. Obviously, “equality before the law” is an unnecessary inconvenience as far as the Head of IGP Monitoring Unit is
concerned.
Deliberate acts of omission and commission such as the two cited above do not portray the
Nigeria Police Force in good light and should be addressed in a paradigmatic fashion.
CP Akin Fakorede and his ilk must not be allowed to continue to abuse their offices and execute such unprofessional, unethical, odious, repugnant and
positions/offices
reprehensible schemes in the name of the Nigeria Police Force – an institution that already
has trust issues with the public.
Meanwhile, suspect, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, needs to be invited by the Police to shed
more light on how he unlawfully “acquired” official documents – one of which has been
materially tampered with
There are provisions in the Administration of Criminal Justice Act to address the clear
breeches of the law by CP Akin Fakorede and Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola. Every action
(or inaction) must beget a consequence
No one is above the law
