The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has called on journalists in Sokoto State to ensure professionalism and accuracy when reporting eyewitness accounts, particularly on security matters.
The NSCDC Commandant in the state, Mr Usman Alfadarai, made this appeal during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the state Council, Nigeria of the Union of Journalists (NUJ), in his office on Thursday.
Alfadarai emphasised the critical role of journalists in managing sensitive information, especially on security-related activities, to foster unity and societal development.
“I recall an incident in Kano State where an explosion occurred.
“Before the authorities could provide accurate details, reports claimed that over 250 lives were lost.
“However, after a thorough investigation and rescue operations, it was confirmed that only 22 people lost their lives.
“Such misinformation stemming from unchecked eyewitness accounts can mislead the public and undermine security operations,” he said.
The commandant also urged journalists to prioritise fact-checking before rushing to break news, underscoring the far-reaching consequences of false or exaggerated reports.
“Journalists are key stakeholders in the country’s security system.
“Credible and accurate reporting is essential for public safety and societal trust.
“Spreading unverified information damages the collective efforts of security agencies in safeguarding lives and property,” Alfadarai stressed.
He reaffirmed the NSCDC’s commitment to collaborating closely with journalists to achieve the corps’ constitutional mandate of ensuring security and public order.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the council, Mr UsmanBinji, reiterated the importance of credible journalism in fostering mutual understanding and support between the media and security operatives.
Binji stated that the visit was to strengthen the existing cordial relationship between journalists and the NSCDC.
He assured the commandant that journalists in the state were committed to partnering with the security agencies to promote safety and the development of the state.
