Neymar sheds tears of joy as Brazil wins Olympic soccer gold, beats Germany 6-5 on penalties

Brazil won its first Olympic gold medal in men’s soccer on Saturday when it defeated Germany 6-5 in a penalty shootout.

The game had ended 1-1 after 120 minutes of play at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

The stadium was filled to the brim as thousands of Brazilians cheered their darling team to victory.

It was a day Brazilian star, Neymar, shed tears of joy as he scored the winning penalty goal.

Neymar and Max Meyer scored for Brazil and Germany respectively in the opening 90 minutes as the match finished in a 1-1 stalemate after extra time.

Both sides were successful with their first four attempts in the shootout, until Weverton saved Nils Petersen’s effort to give the hosts a chance to win it in the fifth round.

With all of the pressure on his shoulders, Neymar — who was visibly limping in extra time — converted the winning penalty to clinch the elusive gold medal for his country.

The Olympics were the only FIFA-organized international tournament that Brazil hadn’t won in its illustrious history.

Germany, meanwhile, has not won gold since East Germany’s triumph in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal.
